DISCOVERED: A great fashion website

As I sat on Facebook today trying to waste my precious time, something interesting popped up on my mini feed. A Facebook friend of mine is interning for Erin Kleinberg (the new&upcoming designer that I have recently been posting about) and she posted this great link to an article about Erin.
http://pipeline.refinery29.com/lookbook/theodora_richards_plays_house.php

I immediately clicked to see what they had to say about her new line.. noticing that the blog and site that it was featured on was one that I had never seen before!

The blog, called Pipeline, is amazing! It updates you on some great styles seen on stars and whats new in the style world!
http://pipeline.refinery29.com/

Then.. I kept browsing and found that the blog was featured on a main site called Refinery 29 which is described as discussing independent style around New York and LA.. which is always a nice change!
http://www.refinery29.com/
it features topics such as trend watch, my style and shopping roundup

Check out this site! it is perfect for fashion lovers who dare to be different!

It is not THE END!

After watching CBC's program called THE END, I really start to wonder about the potential of the end of media such as TV, print and radio. In the program, Jian Ghomeshi, a pop culture specialist, interviews different people to find out about their view of the end of these main media outlets. With the emergence of alternative media all over the Internet such as blogs, digital music downloading and online radio stations, many question why we even need the so called “old school” media. But, even in a world drawn to the use of the Internet instead of the newspaper, and free music as opposed to a CD, we will always need these things!

This makes me think about my life and whether the end has come for print, radio and TV in my own life. The simple answer is no.

I still love to turn on the radio when I am on my way to school to listen for a new song or a juicy piece of celebrity gossip. But don't get me wrong, I still enjoy the luxury of downloading music instead of going to buy a new CD.

As well, print still dominates in my life as I look forward to picking up the latest People magazine or UWO Gazette. But I must admit, I am a common user of the online newspapers instead of actually picking up the hard copy.. but that's still supporting print right?

And last but not least.. TV. How could I ever cut you out of my life? I plan my days around my favourite TV shows (even though I have PVR). But, I must admit that I love to use online sites that post episodes of TV shows so that I can catch up to where they are at on real TV.

Just as a side note... in regard to my online life.. I thought I would provide my favourite online sites for alternative print, radio and TV:

To catch up on episodes of TV I love this site!!! http://www.surfthechannel.com/

For celebrity gossip http://perezhilton.com/

Soo.. just a side note.. I think I may have jinxed myself when I prayed for a Macbook in my last post as my computer has just crashed and.. well I guess it is just telling me to buy a Mac right?
So.. as I think about how sad this is and how much I don't want to do my work I look around at the interesting fashion styles in Weldon Library.....
So I thought I would humour everyone with the top 5 I can see from my seat:

1. Knit Ugg Boots--I must say these are interesting. Although I am a fan of Uggs I am not a fan of these. They look alot like those slipper booties that I wear around the house... except people are clearly wearing them out of the house.. They are really only practical for spring or summer.. and I personally think they are kind of ugly... Sorry if you have them..

2. Guys wearing Converse--I actually really enjoy this style on guys! Many guys I know would refuse to wear Converse because they think they will look "gay" but I think they are wrong. They look so cute on guys with a pair of nice jeans and they make a guy look more preppy which is a style I love!

3. Guys wearing leather jackets-- Although as you might know I am a fan of leather jackets... I am not too sure how i feel about them on guys. Well actually I take that back.. I don't know how I feel about TIGHT leather jackets on guys. Loose ones are okay. But I personally don't care to see how skinny a guy is.. its not so attractive.

4. Wearing dress shirts to school-- I am not bashing dress shirts on guys at all.. but some guys need to get the memo that campus is not the place for them... the bar is. They look great but it looks a bit funny when you are wearing one with your backpack..

5. Shorts over stockings-- I am not sure which girl decided this was an appropriate style that looked good. But its not really. Skirts with stockings is okay.. but shorts? It just looks a bit funny. Save your shorts for the warm weather, don't attempt to wear them while its still cold!

If you are reading this and you enjoy some of these trends.. I apologize! I am just voicing my opinion about some funky styles I see around the library...
Have you seen any funny styles? Please share them!

A Macbook Fashion Statement

Every so often I change the subject over to a technology which has become fashionable..
Such as the Blackberry..

But as I sit in class I cant help but think about the fact that Apple Macbook computers have truly become a fashion statement all over campus.

I personally don't have a Mac computer... but I am not going to pretend like I don't want one.
I mean they are very good computers so people do buy them because of their functionality, but sometimes I think that people really choose them for the look.

If you look at someone with a Macbook and someone else with a Toshiba computer... do you judge them? You probably say no out loud but don't pretend like you don't!

Macbooks are like a fashion statement.. each model goes out of style and then everyone wants the new model because its the coolest one.

If you are living in a bubble and haven't heard of the newest Macbook.. check it out here!!
Its beautiful.. and environmentally friendly which is always a plus!

Are you one of the Macbook followers or are you completely against this widespread fashion trend all over campus?

Celebrities LOVE to design!

All you ever hear now is that a new star has created a new line of something, and its going to be big.. but does it ever really get sooo big?

Not really.

Although... there is a website dedicated to it! Check out this website Celebrity Clothing Line which updates you on all of the new products that celebs are endorsing or designing themselves!

http://www.celebrityclothingline.com/

This is a great site to find out all the celeb gossip regarding products!

For instance... Kanye West has been seen wearing lots of jean jackets... and the reason is because he is planning to design his own.. interesting?

As well.. there is a whole story on the endorsements that Chris Brown got let go of due to his fight with Rihanna..

An new&upcoming designer!

This past Friday was the OHM Fashion Show which was run to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society..(as I previously posted)

In order to raise as much money as possible there was a silent auction for things generously donated to the show.

A new designer named Erin Kleinberg donated a piece from her beautiful line of clothes and I could not take my eyes off of it! Erin is a young designer from Toronto who has recently become popular in the celebrity world.

You must check out her website to see her stunning new line!

Her pieces are so practical and but have that extra accent on them to make them different!

You can find her line in Holt Renfrew and TNT Blu!

Boating shoes are in!!

With this beautiful weather upon us, its time to whip out our flats, moccasins and... our Sperrys!

For those of you who have yet to hear about Sperry's, they are really a boating shoe made for sailor's and stuff, but it seems that our generation has revamped them into a must-have item for the summer!

Formally called Sperry Topsiders, http://www.sperrytopsider.com/my favourite new shoes come in tons of different styles..I have seen them in patent, leather and canvas and in tons of colours like plaid, bright yellow and standard chocolate brown.

My personal favourites are the standard chocolate brown leather ones!! So classic.

You can wear them with basically anything... shorts, leggings, jeans

The only problem I have with them is that I am having the hardest time getting my hands on a pair!! I guess because I am a size 7 shoe which apparently is the most popular size..

I went to Capezio Shoes http://capezioshoes.ca/ in Yorkdale and they didn't have them and Get Outside http://www.getoutsideshoes.com/didn't have them either..

I think Ill have to order them online from Get Outside...

Has anyone spotted them anywhere else??

Give me your thoughts on this great new trend!!

My dream handbag is someone's book bag...

You would think Marc Jacobs wouldn't seem to be a name that's thrown around in a student's vocabulary...but you would be surprised...

as I look around each day.. I am blown away by the types of bags people choose as their school bags... such as my rant about Longchamp Bags earlier on..

But this is ridiculous.. I would die to have one of these bags on my arms even for a day, and I keep seeing students using them as their book bags!!!

I don't get it.

Anyways.. I was browsing my favourite online shopping site http://www.shopbop.com/ and quickly clicked to the Marc Jacobs handbag section..

So I though I would share my favourite styles... which are the cheapest.. but not cheap at all..

This 'Pretty Nylon Stitched Tate Tote' is $188 and could MAYBE be used as a book bag.. but still.. I would use it as an every day bag because its amazing.
marc jacobs, purse,fashion

This 'Classic Q Hillier Hobo' is $398 which is sadly the cheapest one out of their leather collection.. and its beautiful..

you cant tell I am a huge fan.. and have yet to have a bag from this beautiful designer..:(

What are your thoughts on these being used for book bags? Also, do you have one? share with us your thoughts and pictures, I always like to drool over something I cant have!!

Nails Colour is Important Too!

south beach collection, OPI, nail polishOne thing that can always brighten up a bad day is a manicure... and these days it seems to be a fashion statement to get the new colour from the new collection.
A popular brand of nail polish is OPI which makes an array of colours and collections with probably the most original names you will ever here..

My personal favourite.. from the Indian collection there is a colour called Keys to my Karma..

So recently they just came out with a new collection called the South Beach Collection.. I cant say this is my favourite group of colours but there are some great ones!

Check out the OPI website to see all of their amazing collections.. and the best part is you can interactively try them on!!! This may sound crazy but its true!!

Enjoy!!

Top 5 Designer Lines for Less

As students, we are always looking to save money somewhere.

As I browsed the Glamour magazine website.. I found a great list which can apply to students who want to be fashionable, but just can't afford those designer brand names.. so I thought I would share this with you all.....
I only provided my personal favourite 5 but there are 10 on the site so check it out!

1. Matthew Williamson for H&M

- The line is probably more expensive than H&M's mainstream clothing but if you are looking to get something of better quality...In may this designer will hit the racks and he is loved by celebs like Sienna Miller and Kate Moss

2. I Heart Ronson for JC Penney

- Her last name is made famous by her sister DJ Sam Ronson but Charlotte Ronson is not as scandalous. She designed a great line featured in JC Penny stores which has great prices and is just for regular girls who like to be fashionable and comfy!

3. Zac Posen’s soon-to-be-unveiled bridge line
-Zac Posen is known to be an expensive designer but he has announced that he is building a lower-priced collections.. finally a student in TRUE style!!!

4. Lark & Wolff by Steven Alan and Hawks by Geren Ford

-I like this one because it can be found at one of my favourite stores, Urban Outfitters. If you haven't noticed yet, Urban is trying to incorporate some more upscale designers into their collection and this is one of them! Check them out this spring!

5. Simply Vera, Vera Wang for Kohl’s

-This is one of the most exciting ones! Now we no longer have to dream of wearing Vera Wang on our wedding day because now it can be incorporated into our everyday outfit with her new less-expensive line found in Kohl's stores. Great for the very feminine dressers!

Know of any designers who are creating lower-end collections? share with us! This is always exciting for students especially!!!

St. Patrick's Day Style

As everyone knows, a week tomorrow is the day that (sadly) many university students look forward to.
ST PATTYS DAY!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick

This lovely day is definitely up there on the list of fun you will have while in university. Its an excuse (well your own excuse) to miss classes for the day, and get drunk all day with your friends.
and of course the best part.. you get to dress up!!! IN GREEN!

So here are some ways to get in the spirit...

1. go the tackiest store you know.. an accessory store like Claire's and get some fun St. Patty's day themed hats, hairbands, glasses and earrings to cover yourself in for the big day.
http://www.claires.com/

2. gather up every item you have that is green

3. if you need green, American Apparel is the place to go as they have every single article of clothing in green for you to choose from
http://store.americanapparel.ca/index.aspx

4. GREEN BEER (that's not a fashion thing but it does turn your lips a funky green colour in spirit of the day)
Click here to see how to make it http://www.slashfood.com/2006/03/16/how-to-make-green-beer/

Start getting ready soon because before you know it all of the other university students will have already gotten their St.Patty's day accessories..

Have fun!!!

Here's a Guinness Beer commercial to get your spirits up!

Looking for a spring jacket?

As the weather is finally getting milder, its time to start thinking about a new jacket of choice, besides our winter parkas that we hate so much.

One jacket style that I noticed alot of girls wearing out to the bars this weekend was the tuxedo blazer. Yes.. this is originally a male style but the hipsters have turned it around into a cute look for girls to throw over a dress or a pair of jeans.

I have been searching for the perfect tuxedo blazer and I think I have found it.

Obviously on my favourite store's website.. Urban Outfitters

Click the above link to see more info on my personal favourite tuxedo blazer!

But make sure to search the rest of the blazers on the website as they have alot more!

This is a great new jacket style.. everyone mustttt indulge in it!

A scarf thats a circle?

I keep seeing this scarf all overt the place, and a recent magazine has told me to buy it at American Apparel (of course! my favourite..)

Its such a cool concept! Its a scarf but its a circle so all you have to do is wrap it around your neck.. and the beauty of it is that you never have to keep wrapping it like other scarves! It never comes undone!

I am thrilled about this new invention.. I must go buy myself one!

They come in a bunch of colours and they are great for the spring because they aren't too heavy but they add that little bit off excitement to your outfit!

They are too separate styles and I love them both! Enjoyyyy

Broadcast Yourself- Who knows what talk show you'll end up on?

In blogging class, we watched a video discussing Michael Wesch's view on the effects of YouTube and how it has changed the world.

Living in a small university town, it appears to be a common theme now to want to share something funny you saw on YouTube. Whenever I go over to a friend's house to hang out, they always having something new to show me on YouTube. And about a day later everyone in my class has heard of it.
But what strikes me as interesting is that not only am I watching a chubby man dance to Single Ladies by Beyonce, but so is Tyra Banks who chose to feature him on her show. It becomes interesting to see how popular a silly video can get around the world, that just an ordinary nobody chose to post because they were bored. Granted the guy who filmed this particular video probably did not know that millions of people would soon be logging on to YouTube to view it, or even that he would actually become famous from it.

If you havent seen the video I am talking about you MUST click here.. you'll get a good laugh!

YouTube is truly a remarkable invention for a world of individuals who need someone to voice their opinions, dance in their room by themselves or parody something from the mainstream media. Before the invention of YouTube our world was itching for something like this, and now we have it with no restrictions.

Personally, I have had a few encounters with YouTube. A couple of years ago I attended a Tragically Hip concert and was very lucky to be extremely close to the stage. Therefore I chose to video the songs and I happen to be singing along. I posted them on YouTube for my friends, but I soon learned that it wasn't just exclusive to them. I mean.. I didn't have the best voice in the world so people had enough to say about their thoughts on that. Needless to say I was a little bit offended and embarrassed so I removed the videos. I guess I forgot that I was basically broadcasting my horrible voice to the world, and It was not a pretty sight (or sound).

Lastly, through this blogging class I have truly become to understand the importance of YouTube. Without it, how would I show you a fashion show that I would never have had access to otherwise? When it comes to school, you can ALWAYS find something on YouTube to show to your class in order to get extra marks, and it truly works like a charm!

Having a user-generated community to engage in has helped our society in countless ways, and it will only continue to give us a laugh, a teaching aid, or an outlet for outrage.
So do what the slogan tells you to and "BROADCAST YOURSELF"!

Take a look at the video:

UWO Charity Event- OHM Glam Fashion Show

Seeing as this is a blog for the students of Western, it would be a good place to promote for upcoming Western events. Last year and this year I have been participating in a fashion show called OHM which is a student run fashion and dance show aiming to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. The show is on March 20, 2009 and up until then the committee is throwing lots of parties to raise money for a good cause!

Here is the link to the Facebook event:

Also, make sure to check out the OHM website as you can see more info on upcoming events, ways to donate to the CCS or sponsor to show!

Although it may be too late to talk to the committee about volunteering or even having your designs in the show, come check it out this year to see what its all about!

Whats the best way to block the sun (or lack there of)?

I must say when I wake up and look out my window to see the weather, if there is sun or not has a large bearing on what I wear, and how happy I am that morning. This morning it was really sunny, which unfortunately gave people the wrong idea about their attire.

But one accessory that is always needed .. SUNGLASSES!

I personally have a hard time with sunglasses, as I always lose them.. so there really is no point of spending tons on a designer pair.. but I found some designer pairs that aren't going to cost me the same as my rent and look just as good!

3 of my favourite brands (which wont put a hole in your pocket) are:

I personally am a huge fan of Ray Ban.. their sunglasses are so hip and in style and really are well priced..
I truly recommend them if you are looking for something new!

They sell them at Sunglass Hut http://www.sunglasshut.com/sgh/index.jsp

They are called the Wayfarer and they actually a throwback of an old style seen in the Blues Brothers movie.. and they are definitely a favourite!

They come in tons of colours and a few different styles..

and of course.. the stars love them!

You must get your hands on a pair before the spring comes!!
